Intuit and Homestead get married…

I have some very exciting news to share with you all today. (Don’t worry, I’m not delusional enough to think that there are actually a lot of you in “you all”.)

Intuit and Homestead have decided to join forces to take our best shot at making small businesses around the country and around the world successful. You can see Justin’s thoughts on his blog.

It’s been picked up by a lot of the bloggers out there, and the general reaction has been fairly positive, but I never really expected it to get a lot of buzz in the blogosphere. But everyone here at Homestead is excited, and that’s what matters.

I do want a address one thing that some of the bloggers are saying: I know that it’s called an “exit” or an “exit strategy”, and as a co-founder of Homestead, I get questions all the time about “exiting”.

In reality, I’m not just blowing smoke (or brown-nosing with the new powers that be) when I say that I don’t see this as an exit, but really an opportunity to play with the big boys and try to blow out Homestead to a greater audience. It’s going to be a rough and tough ride, I’m sure, but I’m excited to jump in and take that ride. I definitely would not be this excited, and I’m sure the deal would not have gone through, if this was a “dump and run”.

One of our ex-employees Matt Franklin posted this on Justin’s blog:

I’d imagine this will definitely help get Homestead products out to more people. You guys have some really, really talented employees, so I’m super happy to see their work get more exposure.

I couldn’t agree more…

Talent Show, YouTube

It’s coming tonight!  I can’t wait!

Homestead has been buzzing (OK, maybe I’m exaggerating) about the Homestead Talent Show the past few weeks. I’ve gone around and harrassed a lot of people into doing something, anything silly on stage.  And tonight, the world will finally see that glorious, mind-boggling talents of otherwise humble Homestead employees.

It’s really open to anyone (all 1 of you who might read this blog but don’t already work at Homestead), so come on by:

Cubberley Community Theatre
4000 Middlefield Road
Palo Alto, CA 94303
7:00 pm

Don’t be late…

Videos will be posted to YouTube sometime in the next few days.

Uhhh… what?

I work with the guy who put up this site. About monkeys on acid.

I don’t know why. He scares me.

But it shows how “cool” the people at Homestead are!

Congrats, Justin!

Justin made it on the front page of Digg last week for his blog post on firing troublesome customers.  Now, he’s responding to some backlash against that.

Talent Show, YouTube

If I say so myself, the Homestead Talent Show is one of the coolest things that we do. I’ve asked employees before, and they say that the two coolest things we do is the talent show and the retreat (where we all the employees somewhere for a few days of fun and “work”).

The talent show is something completely different.  Every year, I go around harrassing people to do something, anything on stage in front of their co-workers. And the things people do are fantastically creative, even if they’re completely untalented.  It really shows the spirit of Homestead and how much enthusiasm we have for each other and for the fun that we have. There are companies that are much larger than ours, with probably more talented people, and I’m sure they couldn’t gather enough spirit to pull together a talent show like ours.

Even Justin, our CEO, performs every year. He ain’t no stiff suit.

This year, Roger spliced the video and dumped them up on YouTube. Check it out!

Justin’s Controversy

Wow, it’s been over two months since my last post. Dood, what have I been doing?

Well, lots of work, playing with my son, and planning and running the Homestead Talent Show. Someday, I’ll get my act together and get up some good pics of the Homestead Talent Show, but until then, trust me.  It’s awesome.

Over on Justin’s blog, he’s got a little controversy brewing over how to rank the importance of customers versus other aspects of business like employees and products. Check it out.

Now, obviously, I’ve been with Homestead for almost 12 years now, so I can’t possibly disagree that much with the man. It might a bit bold (or silly, or stupid) to say that customers are third, but don’t worry, Homestead really does care about its customers and we work really damn hard to keep them happy. Running a business is all about finding the right balance between all the priorities that are ripping you apart.
